GROUND ZERO MOSQUE CONTROVERSY

New York leaders' discomfort

Obama: Backing Muslims' right to build NYC mosque is not an endorsement

"It's going to play poorly for many Democrats and will be used as a political club by those Republicans willing to exploit it," said one senior Democratic aide on Capitol Hill, where the president's party is worried that it could lose control of one and possibly both houses of Congress this fall. The aide asked for anonymity to speak freely.

President Barack Obama's decision to make public comments Friday that further stoked an already-brewing controversy over the construction of a mosque near Ground Zero was "purely" his own, an administration official said Saturday.

Obama's sage decision to back Manhattan mosque

There is nothing remotely provocative or political about the plans for an Islamic center in lower Manhattan. It is not on ground zero. Its proximity to the site of the 9/11 attacks — about a block and a half — is incidental. People who are familiar with the rabbit warren of lower Manhattan know that practically every form of commerce, including sex shops, can be found in a similar proximity to the site of the former World Trade Center.
